• Navigation lights are the primary method for identifying a vessel's position, direction, and status in low-light and nighttime conditions. Proper use allows other operators to assess right-of-way and avoid collisions.

• Dusk is one of the highest-risk periods on the water. Rapidly changing visibility, increased traffic as boats return to marinas, and reduced contrast and depth perception all combine to elevate collision risk precisely when navigation lights are most critical.

• Despite this, most recreational vessels still rely entirely on manual operator activation — leaving a safety-critical function dependent on memory, timing, and attention. 

• 3,887 total accidents reported

• 556 fatalities

• Poor visibility and improper navigation lighting are consistently identified as contributing factors in nighttime and low-light boating incidents. Operator inattention is the leading cause of reported accidents.
